Asking for a Promotion

Just the idea of asking for a promotion or salary rise can be daunting enough. But if you don’t ask you don’t get, so these top tips will help you understand how to ask the all-important question!

  1. WHAT YOU NEED TO DEMONSTRATE WHEN ASKING FOR A PROMOTION

You need to know in advance what you might need to demonstrate in order to gain a promotion. Make sure the information you get is specific, so that you know what targets you need to reach, or experience you need to gain. Then ask for written confirmation that if you achieve what was agreed, you are eligible for a promotion.

  2. EVIDENCE OF PERFORMANCE ABOVE EXPECTATIONS

You are unlikely to get a promotion or pay rise just for doing your current role. You need to ensure you have documented evidence of where you have exceeded the expectations of your role.

  3. GAIN ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE

If you are able to get experience beyond your current role, it can help show you being a more rounded employee. Find out about the possibility of secondments to other departments and find time for personal development.

  4. WHAT ARE YOU WORTH?

The internet is your friend. Do some research on what your current market value is. Is there a way you can quantify your value – compare the sales you bring in to your salary.

  5. DO YOU REALLY WANT IT?

Make sure you are not being lured into a role you don’t really want, just because of a salary increase. Generally, if you are earning more money, you will be asked to do more. Be sure you are happy with that.

  6. DEVELOP YOUR SUCCESSION PLAN

You don’t want to be forced to stay where you are because no one else can do your role. Demonstrate your training, coaching and mentoring skills to both show your readiness for promotion and ensure there will be someone ready to take your role.

  7. TIMING

If the company states this is not the right time for it, possibly due to financial issues, find out about future plans. Ask when it might be possible and make sure you understand what the issue with the current timing is, don’t be fobbed off!

  8. ASK

Finally, if you don’t ask, you don’t get! Companies rarely give out promotions or a pay rise without a prompt, so make them aware you are ready for one.
