How to be Happy at Work

If you can find happiness in your work, it will make your working day more positive and enjoyable and should have a positive impact on your effectiveness.

  1. DEVELOP GOOD WORKPLACE RELATIONSHIPS

If you think of your colleagues as ‘just people I work with’ this attitude is likely to come out in your dealings with them. You don’t have to be best friends with everyone but put some time into developing good working relationships with co-workers.

  2. MANAGE YOUR OWN DEVELOPMENT

Take responsibility for your own development; don’t expect anyone else to. You are the person who cares most about it after all!

  3. GET REGULAR FEEDBACK

It can feel daunting to ask for feedback, but no one is perfect, and it is better to know where you can improve, rather than putting your head in the sand and hope no one notices.

  4. AVOID NEGATIVITY

There will always be someone you work with who carries negativity around with them and can get you involved in negative conversations or gossip. Try to avoid getting sucked in; negativity is catching.

  5. HAVE BRAVE CONVERSATIONS

We tend to shy away from conflict but generally, meeting it head on and tackling the issue can reap rewards. Be courageous in the workplace and have those difficult conversations.

  6. BE FAIR TO PEOPLE

Treat people fairly, whether they are colleagues, your boss or working for you. If people feel they are being treated unfairly, they are unlikely to perform at their best.

  7. DON’T OVER-COMMIT

Many workplace stresses arise from committing to something you don’t have the time to achieve. By only committing to those tasks you have time for, you can reduce the amount of time spent worrying about them.

  8. TAKE ON RESPONSIBILITY FOR KNOWING WHAT IS GOING ON

Many people wait to be told what is happening, but if you can be proactive in finding out what you need to know, you will be more effective.

  9. DO SOMETHING YOU LOVE

It is unlikely you will love everything about your job, but look for the part of your role that you do enjoy doing and see if you can increase the time spent on it in your role.

  10. CHOOSE TO BE HAPPY

By focusing on a positive frame of mind and simply choosing to be happy, you are more likely to actually be happy, and you tend to avoid the negativity.
