AI in Practice for Managers

Description

Managing people who use AI raises questions that using it yourself does not. You are answerable for work you did not write, produced with tools you may not have chosen, by people who may not have told you they used them. This session is about that layer of responsibility - knowing what your team is doing, reviewing what comes to you, and setting expectations that people will actually follow.

It builds on the core AI in Practice session, so delegates arrive already knowing how these tools behave and where the risks sit for an individual user. The focus here is the oversight that sits on top - what you are accountable for, how to have a useful conversation about tools nobody approved, what to ask when a report lands on your desk, and how to use AI safely in your own management work, including one-to-ones, appraisals and recruitment, where the information involved is about your own people.

Objectives

  • Explain what you are accountable for when the people you manage use AI and relate it to the conduct standards that apply to them.
  • Recognise where AI is being used in your team and open that conversation without driving it further out of sight.
  • Review work you did not produce, asking the questions that reveal whether AI-assisted output has actually been checked.
  • Apply data protection and fairness standards to your own use of AI in people management.
AI in Practice – Responsible Use and AI Literacy

Description

AI is already part of everyday work, whether anyone has made a formal decision about it or not. This half day session is about using it well - getting real value from these tools while avoiding the problems that come from using them carelessly. The focus is on how people use AI rather than on the tools themselves, so it works whatever systems your firm has approved. It is practical and discussion-led, with delegates working through real examples.

The day covers the three foundations of AI literacy, knowing where AI is already present, judging when to rely on it and having the confidence to question what it produces. It then turns to the areas carrying most risk in a regulated firm - what can and cannot be entered into a tool, how AI-assisted work reaches customers, and the fact that anything leaving your desk carries your name rather than the tool's.

Firms differ in what they allow, so we do not tell delegates which tools to use. They leave knowing what to look for in their own firm's policy, and what to do if something goes wrong.

Objectives

  • Apply a structured test to decide whether a given task is suitable for an AI tool.
  • Identify the data protection risks in a proposed use of AI, and state what must not be entered into a tool and why.
  • Review AI-assisted work for accuracy, tone and understanding before it is relied on or sent.
  • Recognise what their own firm's policy requires of them, and what to do if something goes wrong.
